After three years away, I finally made it back to one of the most beautifuland unforgivingstretches of coastline in California: BIG SUR. This place has always been one of my favorite spots to fish but it demands everything from you. Like the quote from *300*: Take from them everything, give them nothing. Thats Big Sur in a nutshell.

The goal for this trip was simple: target big vermilion rockfish. These fish stack up in this area, and when you find them, you better be readybecause they fight hard and dont come easy.

But the ocean had other plans.

After over a decade of fishing this coastline, I hooked into something completely unexpected a massive ocean whitefish. What followed was an absolute battlepowerful runs, heavy pressure, and a fight I wont forget anytime soon. Not what I came forbut easily one of the highlights of the trip. And yeah theyre delicious too.

And this place? Its no joke.

The ocean can look deceptively calm, but sneaker waves crash hard against the rocks without warning. Every move has to be calculated. One wrong step out here and things can go bad fast.
