The video opens with Jackie tucked in sound asleep with the chicks underneath her. While she is dreaming, Jackie suddenly makes soft chortles but stays sleeping. Do eagles actually dream? Yes! It appears that birds do dream. In the state called unihemispheric sleep, one half of the bird’s brain is awake and alert while the other half rests with one eye partially open to watch for predators. The brain shows a burst of activity in the area known as the RA ( robustus archistratalis) which is known to be involved in singing & vocalizations. Eagles generally sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. This helps them to remain vigilant for predators. Dreaming helps animals -- including humans--"rehearse" things they have learned to do in the day, and help them perform better the next day. Back in 2019 I captured Jackie making soft vocals and moving her head slightly with eyes fully closed. Then she throws her head back as if she was in full vocal alerting to something like she does during the day. Her eyes remain closed as she then tucks herself in. 🎥 Do Eagles Dream?
